The CAT9532 is a CMOS device that provides a 16-bit parallel I/O expander for LED dimming control.The CAT9532 outputs can directly drive 16 LEDs in parallel, each of which can be switched on and off individually or blinked at one of two programmable rates. The device provides a simple solution for dimming LEDs with 256 brightness gradients for backlighting or color mixing applications. The CAT9532 is suitable for I2C and SMBus compatible applications where it is necessary to limit the amount of bus data or release a timer on the master bus. The CAT9532 contains an internal oscillator and two PWM signals to drive the LED outputs. The user can program the time period and duty cycle for each PWM signal. After an initial setup command is issued to program Blink Rate 1 and Blink Rate 2 (frequency and duty cycle), each open-drain output can be turned on, off, or cycled at Blink Rate 1 and Blink Rate 2 with a single command from the main bus. Each open-drain LED output provides a maximum output current of 25 mA. The total current received by all I/Os must not exceed 200 mA.
